Considering how many books I have read lately, I have failed to write any reviews. However, this book made such an impact on me, that I feel I have to share it.
Understanding Israel and Palestine has been something I have struggled with, but I've read quite a bit now. However, this book has opened my eyes to the history and conflict in a new way. I trust someone like John McCarthy, having been a hostage. His love for the country stands out. He meets many Palestinians, as (well as Jews). He tells their stories, the heartbreak, the violence, the inequality, the evictions, lack of facilities such as basic services and education for the Palestinian chiilden. He tells the stories the Zionist don't want told, of what really happened in 1948 and the ongoing breaking up of families and rights. This book made me angry and it made me want to cry. John gives a real feel of what it is like to live there never knowing when soldiers would come to move you out and what it is like to live by the wall and negotiate the checkpoints. A must read book.
